Aging in Place Bathroom Remodel

As we get older our needs change and we need to learn to accommodate our daily routine. Something as simple as a new bathroom can make a difference in our daily life.

That was the case with the Parkway Bathroom. Our clients have lived in their house for many years, and as they entered their senior years they needed to update their current bathroom to accommodate their health needs and to ensure their ability to care for themselves in their own home. Our client has a severe medical condition that requires her to soak in a bath several times a day to get relief from her symptoms.

As you look at the before pictures, you will see that their current bathroom was not the most convenient for their needs.  The most important thing our client needed was a tub where she could easily get in and sit comfortably for long periods of time. The Kohler Elevance Rising Wall tub was the perfect tub for the space and needs of our client. We added in-floor heating to the new design so that we could remove the floor mats and remove any potential tripping hazards.

It is no secret that many products designed for aging in place lack aesthetic appeal. We made sure to keep that in mind when making some changes to the current design in the bathroom. Grab bars were also placed carefully so that they could utilize them as they spend more time in the bathroom. We were also able to give them more storage with the use of recessed medicine cabinets which include nightlights, outlets, magnifying mirrors and a magnetic organization system. Our clients are avid art collectors so we also added several niches to display their favorite sculptures.

The tub was challenging to install. We had to watch a video and take a test before Kohler would certify that we could install it. Because it is such a specialized tub, we had to get creative with some of the framing. Superior craftsmanship was demonstrated by expertly using glass, porcelain and stone tiles to create a warm, yet modern space. We are confident that this project met the health needs of our clients while also giving the bathroom an overall updated look.
